Michael Young is the longest-tenured Texas Rangers player, having made his major league debut late in 2000 and sticking on the roster permanently in 2001. He said Wednesday was the first time he has ever taken the advice of the training staff. Young was out of the starting lineup for the first time the season because of back stiffness that cropped up Tuesday. He said it's the fourth time that he has suffered this kind of discomfort, most recently in 2009. "Every time it's a one- or two-day deal," said Young, who was available to pinch hit. "The training staff thought the obvious move was to give it a day."
