Looking for a veteran insurance policy, if not a mentor for one of their prized younger players, the Rockies have agreed in principle to a minor-league deal with catcher Yorvit Torrealba. "Good evening. I want to tell my fans that I have signed with Colorado for a year. Thank you all for the support," Torrealba tweeted in Spanish on Thursday night. The Rockies also continue mining for a starting pitcher, but they have moved on from Carl Pavano, who reportedly suffered a non-throwing arm injury recently that will sideline him for several weeks. That leaves Derek Lowe and Brandon Webb, if he can show he's healthy, as possibilities. Torrealba, 34, rejoins a Colorado franchise where he experienced his most success. He helped lead the Rockies to the playoffs in 2007 and 2009, supplanting Chris Iannetta as the starting catcher. His signing is expected to become official Friday. He returns in a different role, uncertain he will make the team but capable of filling a void in spring. Ramon Hernandez, who is returning from hamstring and hand injuries, will participate in the World Baseball Classic for Venezuela. His absence could extend for more than three weeks, leaving the Rockies in need of a safety net for Wilin Rosario. Rosario posted one of the best rookie seasons ever by a catcher offensively, hitting 27 home runs. However, he led baseball with 21 passed balls, and no team had more wild pitches. Rosario declined an opportunity to play for the Dominican Republic in the WBC, choosing to work with the pitching staff. During his Rockies' tenure, Torrealba was a commanding presence behind the plate, earning high marks for how he steered the wheel for pitches, exhibiting attitude and confidence. Prior to Torrealba's signing, Jordan Pacheco was Rosario's primary backup. The Rockies would prefer to catch him once a week, freeing him to play first and third base. From 2006-2009 with Colorado, Torrealba batted .258 with 23 home runs and 152 RBIs.
