Last year, Gary Sanchez lost his starting job in the playoffs. This season, he couldn’t make it out of April.

The catcher wasn’t in Tuesday’s lineup against the Orioles and Aaron Boone said Sanchez and Kyle Higashioka will be a “day-by-day thing.”

“[Higashioka has] just earned more playing time,” Boone said before the Yankees beat the Orioles, 5-1, at Camden Yards. “Simple as that.”

Not exactly. Though Higashioka has played well, the decision is also a result of Sanchez’s continued struggles at the plate that made some of the progress he seemed to make during spring training into a distant memory.

And Higashioka backed up Boone’s confidence with another excellent game, with two hits — including his fourth homer — and guiding Corey Kluber to his best start as a Yankee.
