Frankie Montas is continuing to experience discomfort in his pitching shoulder and could need surgery, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said on Wednesday.

Montas was already expected to miss the beginning of the regular season. General manager Brian Cashman said in January that the right-hander was about eight weeks behind in his throwing program. Blake said that Montas has been unable to resume throwing.

“That’s one we’re still kind of working through with the doctors, trying to assess where he’s at,” Blake said. “Obviously, there’s some work to be done there, but that’s a little bit farther down the road.”
