Someone had to go.
To make room for starting pitcher Luis Severino, the Yankees designated infielder Breyvic Valera for assignment before Tuesday’s game against the Angels at Yankee Stadium.
Severino was returning from the 60-day injured list, having missed all season with right rotator cuff soreness that turned into a Grade 2 right lat strain. The 25-year-old righty was making his first start of the season. In February, he agreed to a four-year, $40-million contract extension with the Yankees.
