When the 2020 NHL offseason began there was considerable speculation suggesting teams carrying plentiful salary-cap space could target rivals seeking to shed salary in the trade market.
Several clubs, such as the Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators, used their plentiful cap dollars to their advantage in recent weeks.
The Avalanche acquired winger Brandon Saad from the Chicago Blackhawks and defenseman Devon Toews from the New York Islanders. The Canadiens dealt for goaltender Jake Allen from the St. Louis Blues while the Ottawa Senators landed goalie Matt Murray from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
On Oct. 28, Sportsnet's Ryan Dixon listed seven clubs still flush with cap dollars that could add salary from desperate teams in the coming weeks and months. The Senators were included, along with the Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers and Los Angeles Kings.
