Third baseman David Freese was back in the Cardinals’ lineup Friday and righthander Jake Westbrook, on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation, was back in the field, too. But Westbrook did very little. After the Cardinals pushed the envelope a bit when they had Westbrook try a session off the mound in San Diego on Wednesday and Westbrook felt discomfort, the 35-year-old righthander merely played catch for a few minutes before Friday’s game. “He’ll play catch again tomorrow and we’ll proceed from there,” said pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. Westbrook admitted he was, in essence, starting over. “Pretty much,” said Westbrook. He said his arm “felt not bad.” Westbrook said he had no idea when he would be able to pitch. “I wish I could say,” he said. “I wish I had more information for you.” Matheny agreed. “Nothing new,” he said.
