Few in-state rivalries get more heated than that of ACC foes North Carolina and NC State. UNC quarterback Drake Maye added fuel to that fire Tuesday during a press conference when asked about playing for his home-state team. The Charlotte native and former 4-star recruit took a shot at the Wolfpack in the process — and not just NC State's football team or athletic department.
"I didn't want to miss out on the home state," Maye said. "... Whether you want to admit it or not, growing up in Carolina, you're gonna be a Carolina fan. Some people may say (NC) State, but really people who go to State just can't get in to Carolina. At the end of the day, playing for Carolina is what a lot of people from North Carolina want to do. So I didn't want to miss out on that, and then obviously the family history and stuff."
Later Tuesday, Maye issued an apology for the comment via his Twitter account.
