The Georgia Bulldogs missed on the 2019 Georgia Gatorade High School Player of the Year when five-star pass catcher Arik Gilbert chose LSU. Kirby Smart and staff did not miss the second time around and one of the most sought after transfers for the 2021 season is now headed to Athens.
Gilbert played his true freshman year in Baton Rouge and, as expected, made an immediate impact. He had 35 catches for 368 yards and 2 TDs. He averaged over 10 yards a catch, often facing double teams. In the end it came down to staying at home and that meant the Classic City for the Marietta High School product.
“Coming home, I believe it was a smart decision to come home. I wanted to be with and near my family,” Gilbert said..”I have been missing all of family and now both of my Grandmothers will be able see me play in person too.”
The 6-foot-5 245-pound playmaker, who was the No. 5 overall prospect in the 2020 class per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, was labeled as a tight end coming out of high school. There was plenty of talk about what position he would play during his communication with the Bulldogs.
