The Tulane football team is searching for an opening-weekend opponent after the Southland Conference postponed all of its fall sports on Thursday amid the COVID-19 pandemic, nixing the Green Wave’s Sept. 3 home game against Southeastern Louisiana.
Still, the cancellation of a contest just three weeks away has not slowed down the Green Wave’s preparation heading into a season fraught with uncertainty. Thursday featured the first scrimmage of camp.
“Obviously the health and safety of our student-athletes is at the forefront, but we also feel like this is very doable,” coach Willie Fritz said. “If it’s not and someone says we can’t do it, we won’t do it, but the jury still seems to be out. There’s been a lot of hesitation amongst groups who are canceling and groups who are playing. We’re full speed ahead until someone tells us positively otherwise.”
