J.J. Redick’s record is safe, at least for a day. Travis Bader made five 3-pointers Friday, leaving him two short of Redick’s record for career 3-pointers made while Oakland defeated Youngstown State on Kahlil Felder’s two free throws with four seconds left, 86-85, in a Horizon League game at the O’rena. Bader was 5-of-13 from 3-point range and had 26 points. He has 455 3-pointers. Redick ended his career at Duke with 457 from long range. “It’s never easy to deal with,” Bader said. “I find myself struggling early. You can’t think as a shooter. It’s that constant repetition. It’s muscle-memory as a shooter.” Bader’s next attempt at history comes Sunday when Oakland (9-14, 4-4) plays at Milwaukee (14-9, 4-5) at 2 p.m. “This team befuddles me,” Oakland coach Greg Kampe said. “But they never quit. Why wouldn’t you come to see this team? “The fans are getting their money’s worth.” Bobby Hain’s 3-point play with 14:05 left gave Youngstown State its largest lead of the second half, 63-52. Oakland took its first lead of the second half, 68-67, on Mitch Baenziger’s only 3-pointer with 8:48 left. Baenziger’s free throw ended a 15-2 run and gave the Grizzlies a 71-67 lead with 8:04 remaining. Kampe went with a four-guard lineup in the final 14 minutes and the Grizzlies played better on both ends. They held Youngstown State to five field goals in the final 12:20. And Bader led the way. He had a steal and 30 seconds later, Duke Mondy made two free throws to cut the deficit to 65-60 with 10:45 left. He made a three to make it a two-point game and the comeback was on. “I got mad at Bader tonight,” Kampe said “And he got fed up. He came over to me on the bench and said to run choice. “That’s a play designed for him to shoot.” That’s what Bader did. His fifth 3-pointer from the right side gave Oakland its largest lead, 80-72, with five minutes to play. Oakland went without another basket until Corey Petros converted a layup off of a fine fed from Dante Williams that gave Oakland an 84-81 lead with 1:11 left. Kamren Belin made two free throws with 46.8 seconds left and Kendrick made two with 8.8 seconds left. After an Oakland timeout Felder got the inbound pass from Dante Williams, drove the length of the floor and drew a foul from DJ Cole.
