The Detroit Tigers obtained outfielder/third baseman Francisco Martinez from the Seattle Mariners and designated outfielder Quintin Berry for assignment to make room for Martinez on the 40-man roster. The Tigers obtained Martinez for a player to be named later or cash considerations in a deal that will be completed on or before June 15. The Tigers then optioned Martinez to Single-A Lakeland. Berry played a key role off the bench for the Tigers last season and was one of the final cuts during spring training this spring. He struggled this season, hitting .168 with 45 strikeouts in 49 games for Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers signed Martinez as an undrafted free agent in 2007 and sent him to the Mariners as part of the trade that brought them Doug Fister at the trade deadline in 2011. Martinez hit .206 with six doubles and seven stolen bases in 34 games for Double-A Jackson this season.
