They knew Prince Fielder would hit for power and drive in runs — which he is doing. What the Tigers did not know, however, is after 114 games, he would be hitting .311, higher than he's ever hit in the majors. And that he would have reduced his strikeouts, from his career high, by nearly 50 percent. For two years in a row as a Milwaukee Brewer (2009-2010), Fielder struck out 138 times. He reduced his total to 106 last year, his final season with the Brewers, but he's taken the next step this season. With only 54 in the Tigers' first 114 games, Fielder would finish the season — at this pace — with only 76 strikeouts. Even more impressively, for the 81-game stretch from May 13 through Saturday night's 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers, Fielder struck out just 29 times in 292 at-bats (352 plate appearances).
