A seven-game West Coast trip ended yesterday with a big thumb's down for Dustin Pedroia. Pedroia didn't play in the Red Sox' series finale against the Athletics after jamming his right thumb Tuesday night. The second baseman believes the problem is in a different spot from the torn adductor muscle that sidelined him for six games last month. Nevertheless, the Red Sox training staff advised Pedroia against swinging a bat, and he's scheduled to undergo further examination today once the team returns home. "I don't know, man. It's pretty frustrating," Pedroia said. "It was fine during the game (Tuesday) night, and then I was sore after the game and now I'm pretty sore. It's just pretty frustrating. It stinks."
