Becoming pawns in a geopolitical and economic firestorm is not the best way to prepare for a season.

The Nets are nearly two weeks into training camp and played one game against a Brazilian team, a breeze of 48 minutes, before heading to China for this disaster of a trip. They’re scheduled to face the Lakers on Thursday in Shanghai, but nobody is 100% positive it will happen because the Chinese government is feuding with the NBA.

NBA Cares events and a Fan Appreciation Night were canceled this week. Their practices were relocated because the gym was, according to ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, “no longer available to them.” What a nightmare. The players and coaching staff were reportedly holed up in a Ritz-Carlton and scared to talk publicly about the tense atmosphere.
