Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland had surgery today on his left knee and might be out until mid-season after a fall at his home. Though he reached only 10 wins in 2013, it was the most consistent season of his career. Holland made 33 starts, the only Ranger not to miss a turn all year. He pitched 213 innings, the first time he surpassed 200 innings in a season. He also set career bests in strikeouts (189) and ERA (3.42). According to baseball-reference.com, Holland ranked 16th among all AL starting pitchers in Wins Above Replacement (3.3), which tries to measure a pitcher’s overall contribution. And it would have been even better had he not finished the season going 1-3 with a 5.78 ERA in September.
