North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren and athletics director Debbie Yow have been engaged in a protracted and somewhat contentious standoff over his contract extension negotiations in recent days, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports, a staredown that is connected to Doeren’s involvement in multiple coaching searches, including Tennessee and previously Ole Miss. Those people spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Doeren, according to one person with direct knowledge of his thought process, was close to becoming the next coach at Ole Miss last weekend and, anticipating that he could be announced in Oxford, stalled recruiting activity for assistants until the Rebels' decision to keep Matt Luke was made Sunday. Instead, the potential deal fell apart after Ole Miss won the Egg Bowl on Friday night and school officials decided to instead give the permanent job to interim coach Matt Luke, as the Rebels finished 6-6.
