TCU is hiring SMU coach Sonny Dykes as its next head football coach, sources confirmed to The Athletic on Friday. The Horned Frogs are swiping Dykes from their Dallas-Fort Worth rival after he led a revival of the Mustangs over the last four seasons.

SMU had made efforts to extend Dykes’ contract and make him one of the highest-paid Group of 5 coaches, sources said, but TCU won out. Dykes will be the Horned Frogs’ first new coach in 21 seasons after the school split last month with Gary Patterson. Dykes, 52, is known for his offensive focus, the opposite of defensive-minded Patterson.

Rhett Lashlee, offensive coordinator at Miami (Fla.) and a former SMU OC, is expected to get the vacancy at SMU, a source told The Athletic, but it is not a done deal yet.
