The Syracuse basketball team won its first 25 games this season, but the Orange couldn't have picked a worse time to lose its first game. Syracuse suffered a 62-59 overtime defeat against Boston College on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse still owns a 25-1 record. Only one Division I team has fewer losses, that being undefeated Wichita State. Even No. 2-ranked Florida has lost twice this season. But it's not just that Syracuse lost for the first time this season, but to who and when. Boston College was a team with a 6-19 record. The Eagles had just two wins in the Atlantic Coast Conference with both of those coming against league cellar-dweller Virginia Tech. The loss also comes as Syracuse is about to end the regular season with the toughest set of games in the country. Syracuse will play four of its last five regular-season games on the road, beginning with Saturday's game at No. 5 Duke. The Orange is the only major conference team in the country that will finish the season with four road games in its last five games. That includes teams in the ACC, the SEC, the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Big East, the American Athletic Conference and the Pac-12. That means out of the 83 teams in those seven major conferences, Syracuse is the only one that will play away from home in four of its last five games. Syracuse's upcoming schedule starts with Duke, then the Orange must turn around and play Maryland in College Park, Md., on Monday. Syracuse will follow up that Saturday-Monday road-trip with a game at No. 14 Virginia on March 1. Syracuse will play its last remaining home game on March 4 against Georgia Tech before wrapping up the season with a long trip to Tallahassee, Fla., to face Florida State. Even that last game is something of a bad scheduling design. The Orange's game at Florida State is on Sunday, March 9. So rather than playing on the last Saturday of the regular season and returning home to get a little rest before the ACC Tournament begins, Syracuse's season will end one day later. That's not a good thing for a team that looked fatigued in its loss to Boston College on Wednesday. The only team in the country that can come close to matching Syracuse's brutal end-of-season run is Colorado. The Buffaloes will play three of their last five games on the road, but it's their last three. Colorado's last three games are at Utah, at Stanford and at California. Unlike Syracuse, which plays two ranked teams in the final weeks of the regular season, Colorado's last three opponents are not in the Top 25.
