Sunderland hitman Connor Wickham is heading back to Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday on loan – to pick up some badly-needed action. The England Under-21 prospect is out of Gus Poyet’s side and will be allowed to move to Hillsborough to stay sharp, rather than play for the reserves. Wickham, 20, had a loan spell at Wednesday last term, scoring one goal in six games. He has been a success for England's U21s, but has failed to live up to his £8million transfer fee paid by the Black Cats when Steve Bruce was manager. Poyet will let Wickham go to the Owls - currently bottom of the second tier and still without a win after 12 games this season - ahead of other rival clubs because he is guaranteed games there. Championship leaders Burnley were also interested, but boss Sean Dyche only wanted him as cover for in-form front-men Danny Ings and Sam Vokes.
