Steve Sarkisian issued an apology Monday for not remaining on the field during the playing of "The Eyes of Texas" following the Longhorns' Week 8 loss at Oklahoma State. A photo emerged postgame of just a handful of Texas players staying on the field at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the traditional postgame playing of the school's alma mater with no sight of Sarkisian — the second-year head coach — in that group.

"That won't happen again," Sarkisian told reporters Monday when addressing his absence during the playing of the song.

The playing of "The Eyes" and participation among Longhorns coaches and athletes became a point of contention in 2020. A number of Texas student-athletes sent a list of demands to administration officials that June, which included the removal of "The Eyes" as the school’s official song, citing racist undertones in the lyrics.
