Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly planning to 'hold off' spending an allocated £80million on a new defender this summer and will instead focus Manchester United's efforts on recruiting a winger.

According to the Sun, the United-boss-in-waiting has been given a transfer kitty framed with a new centre-back in mind following the grievances of former manager Jose Mourinho about the position.

Mourinho lamented a lack of options at centre-half, regularly rotating between Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof during his three-year stay.

But the Norwegian interim boss is determined to allow United's current contingent a fair crack at the whip, following a dramatic upturn in form since the former Red Devils striker took charge.
