After battling a cold, Rockies lefty Drew Pomeranz should be back on the mound Wednesday night — just in time to face Team USA in its final tuneup for the World Baseball Classic. Manager Walt Weiss will get a chance to see how the 24-year-old Pomeranz performs in the spotlight. "I know this is boring," Weiss said, "but I'd like to see Drew do what we're asking all of our pitchers to do: keep the ball down in the zone and work ahead in the count." Pomeranz, trying to make the team for the second consecutive spring as the fifth starter, has allowed two earned runs in four innings. Pitching coach Jim Wright continues to work with Pomeranz during side sessions. Pomeranz's goal is to be less mechanical and more athletic in an effort to find a more consistent arm slot. Right-hander Chris Volstad, who's emerging as a strong contender to make the rotation, will start vs. Team USA.
