A familiar face is returning to the Cincinnati Reds’ big-league camp this spring.
Derek Dietrich signed a minor league contract Wednesday, almost one year to the date that he signed a minor league deal with the Reds last season. Dietrich was assigned No. 35 after his No. 22 jersey was already given to free-agent signing Wade Miley.
Last year was quite the roller coaster for Dietrich. He hit 17 homers during the first two months of the season, producing a 1.073 on-base plus slugging percentage in his first 54 games. Then he followed it with two homers in his final 59 games with a .520 OPS.
Dietrich, who went on the 10-day injured list in August with left shoulder inflammation, finished the 2019 season with a .187 batting average, .328 on-base percentage, 19 homers and 43 RBI. He said his shoulder injury affected his swing and he underwent arthroscopic surgery at the end of the season.
