Just when it looked like the Red Wings were getting healthier, another important player went down. This time, it’s defenseman Jonathan Ericsson. General manager Ken Holland said Ericsson will miss three to five weeks with two broken ribs suffered in Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders. Ericsson appeared to hurt himself on two different occasions in the game – on collisions with Islanders forwards Josh Bailey and Matt Martin. This is the second time this season Ericsson will miss substantial playing time. Ericsson missed 10 games in late October / early November with a shoulder injury. It’s a big blow for the Red Wings, as Ericsson forms the team’s top defensive tandem with Niklas Kronwall. Ericsson has one goal and seven assists in 29 games with a plus-9 rating, tied for best on the team with Kronwall. The Red Wings will not promote anyone from Grand Rapids at this time, as they have six healthy defenseman currently. Jakub Kindl has been a healthy scratch the last two games.
