The Red Sox will place reliever Heath Hembree on the 10-day injured list with an elbow strain Friday, a baseball source confirmed. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe first reported the move.

The corresponding move is not yet known. Boston needs a roster spot for lefty Brian Johnson, who will come off the IL to start one of the games of Saturday’s doubleheader, but also may opt for a more traditional reliever (like Ryan Brasier) in Hembree’s spot. The Sox will also need to activate a 26th man for the doubleheader and could make further roster moves before the series opener against the Yankees on Friday night.

Hembree spent three weeks on the IL with a right elbow extensor strain from June 14 to July 4 after experiencing forearm tightness while warming up in the bullpen June 13.
