Catcher Christian Vazquez will play second base for the first time in his major league career Monday. He played 4.2 innings there at Low-A Greenville during 2010.

Manager Alex Cora made a few position changes before the Red Sox’s Patriots’ Day game, including moving Dustin Pedroia from second base to DH and Christian Vazquez from catcher to second base.

Vazquez started nine games at third base early in his minor league career. He has played four games (four innings) at third base the past two seasons.

This marks his first major league start in the infield.

“Ground balls, I’m going to block it. I’ve got a cup," Vazquez joked. "Don’t worry.”

Vazquez played 6 innings at first base during Game 3 of the World Series, the 18-inning game.
