Former major league outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined about $1.2 million for mishandling funds as a mayor of his hometown in the Dominican Republic, according to multiple reports. Mondesi, whose son plays for the Kansas City Royals, had been on house arrest since February as he awaited trial on charges related to allegations he defrauded San Cristobal of about $6 million as mayor during his six-year term that concluded last year. As part of the sentence, Mondesi, 46, is barred from holding public office for 10 years.
