The Rangers organization was understandably offended during Monday night’s first intermission when the video clip of Maple Leafs D Dion Phaneuf’s concussion-inducing hit on Michael Sauer on Dec. 5, 2011, at Madison Square Garden, which very likely ended the promising career of the Rangers defenseman, was shown on the video scoreboard. What could be considered in particular poor taste was the segment host, in a Maple Leafs’ jersey, asking the Air Canada Centre crowd whether it wanted to see a particularly good hit by Phaneuf. Sauer, still dealing with concussion symptoms, has not played since. Two posts The Maple Leafs led 1-0 after a first period in which they outshot the Rangers, 8-7. But the Rangers twice hit posts before the Maple Leafs scored. First, D Ryan McDonagh’s slap shot at 5:31 clanged off the right post. Then, D Dan Girardi struck the same post at 10:45 after RW Mats Zuccarello lost control of the puck near the crease. James van Riemsdyk of Middletown promptly swatted in his own rebound at 11:03 for his 16th goal on the Maple Leafs ensuing rush up ice. Third star G Henrik Lundqvist was named the NHL’s third star of the week behind the Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin and Blues goalie Brian Elliott after he went 3-0-1 with a 1.22 goals-against average and a .962 save percentage. That included 48 saves in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Carolina, Lundqvist’s personal best in a non-overtime game.
