The Pirates traded shortstop John McDonald to the Cleveland Indians today for a player to be named later or cash, the team announced. McDonald, 38, was on the 15-day disabled list since May 15 because of back and elbow pain. He had two hits in 35 plate appearances for the Pirates this season. The Pirates acquired McDonald from the Arizona Diamondbacks March 20 to add depth at shortstop after Chase d'Arnaud had thumb surgery. The move cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for Gerrit Cole, whom the Pirates plan to call up Tuesday.
