The Pirates bolstered their rotation Tuesday by acquiring Wandy Rodriguez from the Houston Astros for prospects Robbie Grossman, Rudy Owens and Colton Cain. Rodriguez gives the Pirates a durable, veteran starter to hedge against second-half fatigue from James McDonald (on pace to surpass last year's innings total by 40) or an injury to Jeff Karstens (who missed more than two months with shoulder and hip ailments), and he provides an immediate upgrade over Kevin Correia, who was sent to the bullpen. The Astros also will pick up about $12 million of the approximately $29.7 million remaining on the lefty's contract, assuming he exercises a player option for the 2014 season.
