Jameson Taillon will start for the Pirates on opening day, manager Clint Hurdle said Saturday.

Taillon, 27, will make his first opening-day start, against the Cincinnati Reds on March 28 at Great American Ball Park. Trevor Williams and Joe Musgrove will pitch the next two games against the Reds and Chris Archer will start the home opener April 1 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“It’s a big honor,” Taillon said. “I get to kick off the season for the boys, set the tone.”

Taillon pitched 191 innings in 32 starts last season with a 3.20 ERA.

Pitching coach Ray Searage texted Taillon, Musgrove and Williams Friday and told them to find Hurdle on Saturday, together. He delivered the news to them in his office.
