If Vinnie Pestano suffers no setbacks tonight pitching an inning at Lake County, he probably will be activated in time for Friday night’s game against the Mariners. “When we put him on the disabled list, I know it looked a little peculiar, the way we did it,” manager Terry Francona said. “We didn’t really have to put him on the DL, but we thought it was in his best interest. “He might be a little rusty, but [if he passes tonight’s test] he’ll be good to go.” WEIRD BUT TRUE — Jason Kipnis has five home runs, and all five have come in the first inning. “So often you see a hitter get more comfortable as the game wears on and he sees more of the pitcher,” Francona said. “But with Kipnis, it’s like his first at-bat is his best at-bat. I don’t know what he does in his approach, but he’s ready from the jump. It’s interesting.”
