Paul Lambert has confirmed he wants a “Number 10” style player to put the spark in Villa Park after Villa enquired about Norwich’s Wes Hoolahan and Porto’s Steven Defour. Villa, who were dumped out of the FA Cup at home to League One Sheffield United on Saturday, have expressed an interest in Hoolahan and have also sounded out Defour. Lambert wants to add fresh impetus to a squad which has been hit by a lack of form and confidence to key players as well as injuries this season. Hoolahan is believed to be Lambert’s first choice having worked with him at Norwich and the 31-year-old Irish international boasts Premier League experience. But Villa’s poor relationship with the Canaries following Lambert’s acrimonious exit from Carrow Road could provide a stumbling block to the move. Belgian international Defour is an alternative target and the 25-year-old’s agent confirmed Villa have declared an interest in the playmaker.
