Grant Holt has emerged as a shock loan target for Aston Villa as Paul Lambert looks to add experience to his squad this month. Lambert was typically guarded about Holt, but it is understood the Wigan Athletic targetman is set to arrive on a short-term deal. Holt enjoyed great success with Lambert at Norwich and has been earmarked to provide cover and competition for Benteke, who ended his 12-game goal drought in Monday night’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Since joining the Latics in the summer, 32-year-old Holt has found goals hard to come by, scoring just twice in 21 appearances for the Championship club. With Libor Kozak out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg, Lambert wants another big striker to take some of the burden off Benteke. The Belgian’s goal on Monday was his first in 14 hours 45 minutes of action since he netted in the September defeat to Newcastle. Asked about a loan deal for Holt, Lambert said: “Holt? I had him at Norwich and he did all right for me at Norwich, but I don’t know too much more.
