Even Patrick McCaffery made a joke about it. When the second oldest son of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced his official commitment to play for his dad and become a Hawkeye, the Iowa City West junior led with some sarcasm. “It may come as a big surprise, but I have decided to commit to play for my father at the University of Iowa,” Patrick McCaffery tweeted. And thus ends the least-in-doubt recruiting process in McCaffery’s tenure at Iowa. His eldest son, Connor, joined the team this year, taking a redshirt while he plays baseball as well, so he’ll have both sons on the team when Patrick graduates from West in 2019. Patrick, the first Class of 2019 commit for Iowa, currently sits as a four-star recruit and is ranked 30th in Rivals’ Top 150 — making him Iowa’s highest-ranked recruit since 2003.
