Odell Beckham Jr. got hurt last year in a preseason game against the Browns.

Beckham did not get hurt this year in a preseason game against the Browns.

The Giants opened up their preseason Thursday night with a 20-10 loss to the Browns at MetLife Stadium. Beckham arrived hours before kickoff, but did not play in the game, even though he was in uniform.

Beckham is coming off surgery to repair a fractured left ankle, though he has not been limited and has looked frisky and healthy in training camp. Nevertheless, coach Pat Shurmur opted to delay the receiver’s summer debut.

“I want to be smart with his recovery coming back, and I never intended to play him in this game,’’ Shurmur said.

Last year, Beckham hurt his left lower leg in the second preseason game, at Cleveland. That injury forced him to miss the regular-season opener. He never really hit his stride and was done for the season Week 5, when he suffered a fractured ankle against the Chargers.
