The Padres are close to acquiring Max Scherzer from the Nationals, sources tell The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Scherzer started for the Nationals on Thursday afternoon, and scouts from more than a half-dozen teams were at Citizens Bank Park to watch the three-time Cy Young winning throw. In his 189th career start for Washington, he went six innings, allowing one run (a homer) and three hits on 88 pitches (56 for strikes). He struck out five, walked three and pitched at his usual mid-90s velocity, showing some command issues early before rebounding. It was his first outing since being scratched last weekend with triceps discomfort. He also took some swings, though he didn't put a ball in play. The Nationals won, 3-1, securing his 92nd win with the team.
