Astros owner Jim Crane made his first appearance of spring at Fitteam Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Wednesday morning.
As he does each year, Crane hosted all members of the organization Tuesday night at the Floridian — his golf resort in Palm City. Wednesday, he met with the media for more than seven minutes prior to the Astros' workout, touching on possible contract extensions and baseball rule changes.
Here is the transcript of Crane's remarks:
Q: How was dinner last night?
A: We had a good turnout, the guys had fun. We got them in there, got them out pretty quick and talked a little bit about the team and what we expect this year, what we're trying to do. Everybody is on board and we're ready to go.
Q: What was your message to the team?
A: Just that we have a deep team and it's a long season. All the guys in the room — we might need every single one of them — so just stay focused. If you don't make the team, that doesn't mean you won't play. We have a lot of games to play, 30 here and another 162 (during the regular season). It's a long season. Hopefully we'll get to the playoffs again, which is the focus, and win another championship."
Q: What do you think about your team this year?
A: We're deep. We have a lot of arms, a lot of young arms. Hopefully we'll see some of them up this year. There's a lot of young guys competing for spots on the roster. So we feel good about the team. I think they've got us on paper (at) 100 wins. Hopefully we can do better than that, win the division and get in the playoffs and get a couple breaks and play hard.
