It came as a surprise to many when Jair Jurrjens was designated for assignment by the Orioles. Jurrjens, who the Orioles signed to a minor league contract in February after three weeks of haggling, is just 27 and was a National League All-Star just two years ago. Jurrjens has been hampered by knee and groin injuries, and the Atlanta Braves did not tender him a contract in November. He started one game for the Orioles, relieved in one other, and allowed four runs in 7 1/3 innings. At Norfolk, Jurrjens was 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA. The Orioles have 10 days to trade, waive or release Jurrjens. There may well be some interest in trading for Jurrjens by other teams.
