Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis has a bone bruise on his left knee and could miss a week of camp. Nieuwenhuis, who injured the knee trying to steal second base on Sunday, underwent an MRI Monday morning and felt the results were good news. “We’ll see how it responds,” Nieuwenhuis said. “I feel pretty good about it. It could be a few days. It could be a week. We’ll see. I just have to wait it out and see how it responds to medicine. I kind of knew when I was walking around the ligaments were fine. It is what it is. It’s good news, but I don’t want to miss time. I don’t want to miss a game.” Terry Collins said Nieuwenhuis could miss about a week. “It’s really sore, really sore,” the manager said. “It’ll probably be three to five days before he’s back on the field.” ZACK IS BACK Mets top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler said he will play catch Tuesday, the first time since he was scratched from a scheduled start last week with a strained right oblique. “It feels fine,” Wheeler said. “I am ready to go.” Collins said Wheeler is expected to throw a bullpen session on Thursday. “He said he feels good, but it is one of those cases where we’re gonna err on the side of caution,” Collins said. “He’s not gonna make the club anyway.” Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-insider-kirk-beams-bruised-knee-article-1.1279541#ixzz2MfSdAePT
