The Cubs have determined they aren't going to get the blockbuster package they sought for Jeff Samardzija right now so they will try again to lock him up or trade him in the winter. If a third attempt to sign him to a big extension fails in the offseason a trade will become much more likely. The Cubs were looking for a package of frontline prospects for Samarardzija and only intended to trade him now if they were absolutely bowled over. Samardzija has two more years to pitch before his eligible for free agency. The Cubs tried last winter to lock up Samardzija on a five-year deal for what was believed to be substantially more than Derek Holland's five year $28.5-million but the sides were so far apart that the Cubs felt it necessary to see what he could bring in trade.
