Reggie Jackson stepped in front of a misguided Eric Maynor pass and scooped up a steal before sprinting the other direction with nothing but a wide open rim and a highlight-reel moment in front of him. On most nights, against most teams, Jackson would have finished the play with an uncontested dunk. But the Oklahoma City Thunder were playing the Trail Blazers that Sunday night and small forward Nicolas Batum doesn’t like to allow wide open fast-break dunks. So Batum sized up the play and instinctively trickled back on defense, hesitating slightly at first, before picking up steam and closing with a sprinter-like burst. Jackson leaped toward the rim, preparing for the finish. But Batum elevated, too, and reached from behind with his Gumby-like arms to spoil Jackson’s highlight moment.
Nicolas Batum has a lifelong love affair with the chase-down block
