NBA analyst Tim Legler recently joined NBA Tonight on ESPN to discuss the Dallas Mavericks' offseason plans. Here are some highlights: On what the Mavs can do this offseason to regain their role as a contender: “I think it’s going to be difficult for them particularly with Dirk Nowitzki getting up there in age, and he’s still the focal point of what you do offensively. But there are options for this team. They have nine free agents. They’re going to have a lot of money to spend in the summer. Unfortunately for them, it’s not the greatest free agent class. I think a lot of the big names like Dwight Howard and Chris Paul, I firmly expect those guys to stay where they are with the Lakers and Clippers, respectively.” On how the Mavs can help Dirk Nowitzki without landing Dwight Howard or Chris Paul: “There some attractive guys out there like Josh Smith and Jarrett Jack and Tony Allen, guys that you can round out your team with. That team still revolves around Dirk Nowitzki and coming off a year in which he missed half the season and didn’t have a very good year with 17 points per game, you wonder what his future is going to be. As long as he’s the focal point and the guy you’re building around, I don’t know if the Dallas Mavericks are going to be a contending team again while Dirk Nowitzki is still there.”
