J.R. Smith, participating in a Guam basketball clinic, told the Pacific Daily News he just wants to be somewhere he can make a difference. "I don't want to be somewhere I can't have an affect on the team," Smith said. Smith opted out of the final year of his contact to become a free agent on July 1. Now more than one month into free agency, Smith is still a free agent, waiting to sign with a team. Smith reportedly met with the Cavaliers in late June, but the two sides haven't come to an agreement yet.
