The Philadelphia Phillies confirmed on Friday the passing of former big league right-handed pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, who had just turned 31 years old back in September. Multiple reports out of Cuba initially noted that Gonzalez died in a vehicular accident in Cuba. After originally defecting from Cuba, Gonzalez put on a showcase for a number of major league clubs across the league. He wound up signing with the Phillies on a three-year deal late during the 2013 season, a contract worth a total of $12 million with a vesting option for the 2014 season. Once a highly touted international prospect, Gonzalez’s path to a consistent major league career was ultimately deterred by both injuries and inconsistency.
