Michigan basketball's head coaching vacancy may soon be filled.

Providence coach Ed Cooley has emerged as a candidate for the open position, ESPN reported, citing unidentified sources.

The report noted Cooley was expected to interview with Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel on Monday, adding that Heat assistant and former Michigan star Juwan Howard is also expected to interview for the job Tuesday.

Cooley, who was in Florida on Monday for the Big East's annual meetings, has been the head coach of the Friars for eight seasons but was called "a perfect fit for Michigan" by one MLive.com source.

However, the Providence Journal, citing unidentified sources, later reported Cooley is staying in Providence.
