Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has left his role as Mexico head coach after his side exited the 2022 World Cup at the group stage despite a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Mexico finally ended their World Cup goal drought as they defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1, only to crash out of the tournament on goal difference on a night of high drama in Doha.

With Mexico leading the game 2-0 and Argentina beating Poland by the same score in the day’s other Group C match, Martino’s side only needed one more goal to progress.

But Saudi Arabia pulled one back in the fifth minute of stoppage time and Mexico could not hit back to progress to the knockout stage instead of Mexico on the goals scored rule.
