Center Matt Stainbrook has been named to the Big East’s five-man honor roll after averaging 13.5 points, 10 rebounds and three assists last week against Villanova and Providence. Stainbrook enters tomorrow’s 9 p.m. game at Butler with XU’s second-highest scoring average (11.3 ppg) and top rebounding mark (8.9 rpg). He chips in 2.5 assists per game, a pretty impressive feat for a player in his position. The 6-foot-10 junior was joined on the honor roll by Doug McDermott (Creighton), Markel Starks (Georgetown), Todd Mayo (Marquette) and D’Angelo Harrison (St. John’s.). Villanova’s James Bell garnered conference player of the week honors after averaging 23.5 points and seven boards in the Wildcats’ 2-0 week. St. John’s Rysheed Jordan again was named rookie of the week after averaging 11.5 points, 6.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and two steals last week. POLL UPDATE: The updated Associated Press Top 25 just came out, and Villanova stands pat at No. 6. Creighton tumbled from No. 12 to 18 after losing last night at St. John’s. If you didn’t catch the Red Storm’s 70-65 upset (and return to the NCAA tournament conversation), just know that it denied McDermott a shot for the last 8:41. The defense on him, headed up by JaKarr Sampson, was impressive.
