Following his start against the Pirates on August 22 Giants right-hander Matt Cain went on the disabled list for the first time in his nine-year career. He was hit in the right forearm by a Gaby Sanchez line drive leading off the fourth inning. Cain has been enduring the worst season of his professional career owning a 4.43 ERA in 156.1 innings. The Giants signed him to a six-year $127.5 million contract extension in April last year and still owe him $87.5 million after the season.
